Use public transport only

by tilaktilak @ 2007-08-23 - 05:20:27

Thats what the chief minister of Maharashtra is appealing to the citizens of mainly Bombay.

There would be SRK, AB Sr. and Priyanka Chopra joining the CM in that endeavour.

Is it possible? Is it practical? I doubt.

There are 3-4 million people already take the local trains everyday and its pathetic the way people commute in them.

The buses are no better.

The Metro which is still in the planning stages is going to take another 2-3 decades to be functional.

If you look at the scenario today, most offices are located in the town side even today and most people working in them live in far away suburbs. These people have no choice but to take publica transport (the local train)

The government is finding it difficult to tackle the people in the towns and close by suburbs as they have cars and the prefer driving them to office than waiting for third class public transport.

So Mr. CM if you want people to use public transport, you need to first make the quality beter, and of greater frequency and match the comfort a car drive offers. Only then people might consider public transport. Other wise na matter how many surcharges you implement. People may eat one meal less but would continue using their own transport as if they are late in office, they lose a day's pay which has huge repurcations in their lives.

Please re think your strategy sir.

You think the public transport system isn't working properly? I'd say a more pressing matter to be dealt with is the repair of your spell checker.

Hey Tilak

I would beg to differ. I think Bombay has the best public transport system in India and not even Delhi's Metro can match up to its efficiency. Be it floods, bomb blasts, riots or any other natural or man made calamity, our public transport system has never failed us. In fact I feel sorry for the fact that each time there is a public outburst, rioters vandalise our buses and trains resulting not only in damage of property but also injury of the drivers and conductors. Having said this I do agree with you that the State Government has to take steps to increase its frequency at least for people living in vasai, virar, kalyan and further areas.

But our public transport system is truly the lifeline of Bombay and I cannot imagine life without them.

Hi Aanchal, There is a saying in Hindi "Andhon mein Kanya" which means visually impaired by one eye amongst a group of blind people makes you 50% better than them.

We might be the best in India. but is that the bench mark? We have no roads in monsoons. Trains where people travel like cattles.

There are Toyotas and HOndas in India. And for the rich to take the public transport, the public transport needs to be of the quality of a Toyota ride if not better.

Can you now say that we are good enough?

Hey Tilak

Firstly, the proverb goes as "Andhon mein Kaana Raja".

Secondly, I do agree that the transport facilities we currently have are in a not-so-good condition. But it is still the best, at least in India and since reaching international standards currently seems Utopian, there is no harm in making other cities of India our benchmark.

the whole article is about what the Bombay CM planning to do for Bombay. We may be the best in India. But, thinking that the rich would take the publica transport is as absurd as thinking that I am going to be Bill Gates next year:-)
